Goal

I'm a busy student at Cal who buys a very inexpensive membership to the student gym (RSF) every semester, uses it 2-4 times, then forgets about it. I am graduating this May and I don't want to leave Cal without meeting my full potential both academically and in health. My personal goal is to strengthen my core and to leave college not just academically competent, but also physically and mentally confident. I promise to attend one Group X pilates or core strengthening class every week for the rest of the semester, and if time allows, to attend one aerobic class in addition. But my main goal is to support At the Crossroads, and in turn, support homeless youth and young adults.

I chose this goal because

After spending half of my life sitting on a chair in front of a computer, I know I need to spend time exercising. I have chosen to focus on my core muscles because I am weak as a sponge! I also have poor balance and fall often, whether wearing flats or heels. Finally, my body image is just...poor. I have been blessed with being thin, but I know this is not a "get out of jail free" card when it comes to my health. I know exercise is very important no matter the body shape. Until I started attending Cal, I had never stepped foot in a gym outside of gym class in high school. I was and still am terrified of looking like an idiot while trying to figure out how to work the equipment and working out. And what if I can't "do" the whole class? I'm more confident now, but still have this mental block sometimes. Your donation will first and foremost help ATC, but it will also give me a big push to continue going to the gym and working out every single week.

I'm helping because

Quite simply, I feel strongly about ATC's mission because of my own experiences around homeless youth when I was a teen. We didn't call any of the kids I knew homeless, but they were. Many had been kicked out of their middle class homes due to frictions with parents, step parents, or siblings. Some were kicked out for being gay. Others for having pink or blue hair and dressing in a non-conformist way. They might have looked different, but they were not "lowlifes" as we may imagine "street punks" to be. My mom graciously, and non-judgementally, took in a couple of my friends and helped them get on their feet. No matter how a teen or young adult ends up homeless or marginally homed, no matter their life story or the current path they are on, I feel it is very important to assist and support them, non-judgementally. At the Crossroads does just this, and that is why I am helping them so they can continue their important mission. Thank you for your donation!

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.
