Ms. B, I am so proud of you! In your honor, I am giving up my morning pilgrimage to Starbucks for a medium, half-caf, skim latte this week and donating the money to ATC.

So proud of you, B; what an inspiration you are! I like Barbara's idea of $1 per day, and so wish I could do more. If my situation changes before the end of your campaign, I'll come back. Hugs...

Goal

My campaign is called 29 GIFTS IN 29 DAYS. I will give a gift by performing an act of service, EVERY DAY for 29 days, beginning February 1.

The gifts will vary but all will have one thing in common - each will be an act of service for someone other than myself. This might be volnteering/ performing community service, donations of time or money, a gift or thoughtful gesture toward a loved one, or a gift to the planet.

I need more ideas so please feel free to make suggestions! I will keep a regular blog for inspiration and motivation, for both myself and others! I really need your support and motivation to help me accomplish this goal!

I chose this goal because

I was inspired by:

1. A woman named Cami Walker who wrote a book called 29 Gifts in 29 days, about the principal of giving each and every day, and the power in doing so.

2. "Be the change you seek in the world." Gandhi

3. One of my yoga instructors Les Leventhal, who teaches his students about the power of giving. I practice quite a bit of yoga on the mat, but I would like to do more off the mat.

4. The notion of Tikkun Olam, a Jewish belief that we have a duty to do our part to "heal the world." The notion says that we can't fix the world all at once, we do it one day at a time, person at a time, one deed at a time.

5. I am seeking increased inner peace and joy, and I believe one way to accomplish this is to focus on helping others.

6. The mission of At the Crossroads: empowering the homeless to improve their own lives. The organization supports the idea that each client has the option to make positive choices in their life and ATC is there to support positive choices, but in the end it's up to the individual.

I'm helping because

I became involved with ATC about two years ago when my company, Gap Inc., sent us there on a volunteer "Day In Action." I had such a fantastic time helping to organize the closet, and learning about ATC. The mission of the organization and the people are truly inspirational. The more I learned, the more I wanted to help out, so I went back to work and figured out how to donate Old Navy clothing direct to ATC. I'm no longer with Old Navy, but I've helped to maintain a connection between the company and ATC, and ATC continues to get donations of much needed new clothing on a regular basis. One of the staff members at ATC told me this week that they just got 70 boxes from Old Navy and the clients are so excited to have new, warm, stylish clothes. This is something most of us take for granted, and it's so important for self-esteem.

This is my second I Think I Can Campaign. I'm excited to be able to help this wonderful organization! Any donation you can make will be so appreciated!

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Feb. 16 - I've done a few interesting giving activities since I last posted. I have to admit that it's hard to stay in the "giving" state of mind. I think that for many of us, taking care of ourselves is the natural first priority. This isn't a bad thing, but I'm hoping my campaign will help make giving more of a habit.

I got an idea from someone else who did a similar campaign to give our chocolate hearts and oranges to homeless for Valentine's Day. So I set out with a bag of oranges and heart chocolates and did just that in the neighborhood. Everyone deserves a little love for Valentine's Day, and always.

I went on an Eco Run the other day, stopping to pick up trash. I didn't want to count on finding trash bins everywhere so I ran with a plastic bag, which looked kind of funny.

Also for Valentine's Day, I bought my partner a gift - a leather bracelet. We typically don't exchange Valentine's gifts, but I know how much little gifts like this mean to her, and that's what made this even sweeter.

Feb. 11 - I read an interesting article about bartering - trading skills that you have for skills a friend has. It's such a great concept but I never thought I had concrete skills (like massage therapy) or something worth trading or giving. But I came up with a few passions and talents - and I want to gift those things instead of barter (although I'm open to that as well!)

My three talents are Public Relations/Marketing (my field), home organization, and healthy eating/fitness. I'm not credentialed in the last one in any way, but anyone who knows me realizes I border on obsessed with the topic, and have read hundreds of books and tried dozens of plans.

Yesterday I met with a friend who has been struggling with his weight so we could talk about a healthy eating and work out plan. It was great - I enjoyed giving tips and advice that I think he can really use - and I hope he'll see results! He seemed grateful for the help, which made me feel go good! Next week we're going to meet at the gym so I can show him my infamous ab workout.

Feb. 9 - Last night I spent two hours helping a group of kids ages 6-12 with homework, while their mom's were getting counseling and services through Harbor House. I loved it! After they finished their homework we had time to kill so I improvised with a short yoga class - the girls were great! After class little Sammie gave me a hug and introduced me to her mom, who thanked me for the yoga, which she says helps Sammie be more calm. I can't wait to go back in 2 weeks.

Feb. 8 - It's been a few days since I've posted my giving activities, but I've been gifting everyday! I just returned from a weekend visit to my Mom, where I gave her the gift of my time.

Also - as a gift to the planet, this week I pledge to give up all plastic water bottles and containers completely. In general I'm pretty good about this, but never perfect. This week I will not use any plastic! (I'll count this as one day's gift).

And tonight I'll be volunteering at the Salvation Army's Harbor House. I'm looking forward to helping kids with their homework! I just hope for their sake I don't get a teenager with math homework because I'm not sure how helpful I will be :)

Feb. 4 - I just made a second donation to the Red Cross to assist with the relief efforts in Haiti. It's helping me keep things in perspective. I got some bad personal news this week and now money is tighter and more of a worry than ever. But compared to the people of Haiti, I have the life of a queen. It breaks my heart to see that kind of devastation, and I hope my dontation will feed someone who needs it much more than I do...

Feb. 3 - This morning as I was walking to the gym I saw a homeless man that I've seen many times before - he's always camped out on this same block. He's in pretty bad shape - you can smell him half a block away. For the most part I prefer to help the homeless through organizations such as ATC, rather than street handouts. But as part of my campaign I'm trying to cultivate a more open heart and mind about the needs of others.

In this case, the man regularly sweeps this particular block, perhaps for donations from residents. But his broom was a mess - barely any bristles left on it. We have 4 brooms at home and no one needs 4 brooms, so I went home and got a broom, then stopped to buy a burrito and cup of coffee. (I've seen him eating burritos before so I know he likes them, well who doesn't?) I gave him the broom and food, and a smile. It felt really good.

Feb. 2 - Today I cleaned out my closets, filled three gigantic plastic bags with clothes and accessories, and took them to Out of the Closet. I've been meaning to do this for a while and it feels great. I really have too many clothes, and there are others who don't have enough. And those of you who know me realize we're not talking worn out Tshirts here! I donated stylish sweaters, blouses, jeans and handbags.

Feb. 1 - So one neat thing that's happened already is that I got emails from three different friends after I sent out my email about my campaign, asking for my time or support. How wonderful! I guess sometimes you need to reach out to people to ask them "how can I help you?"

Today one of those friends came over for lunch. We spent a couple of hours cooking and communing. I opened my ears to be sure I was hearing what she needed, and just tried to be there with support. It was a wonderful afternoon that nurtured us both! I just got this email from my friend after she got home:

Thanks so much for your tremendous support! I feel so safe, comfortable, understood and unjudged by you. You are a gift! So you can cross today off the list, you've already given and then some!

This is a photo of my yoga instructor I mentioned, Les Leventhal. One of the things I love about the practice Les guides is that he teaches us to think outside ourselves, both on and off the mat. Thanks, Les. Les teaches at Yoga Tree in the Castro.

I'm getting geared up and excited to officially begin my campaign this Monday, Feb. 1!

I've actually started my giving, and also started a subtle mind-shift. Yesterday a homeless person had their cart parked in my doorway. My first instinct was to figure out how to get him to move. I'm being honest here, and I hope others will understand - after all, not many of us would like a homeless person camped out in our doorway. But it was my approach that was different. Instead of asking him to move, I asked him if he needed help, or if he was hungry. I was coming in from grocery shopping so I gave him a box of crackers, and after I went inside he disappeared.

Today I'm brainstorming and making a list of ideas for how I'll give over the course of the month. I don't even have 30 ideas yet so please send me yours! I've signed up for 3 volunteer opportunities through an organization called Hands On Bay Area, a wonderful organization that makes it so easy to volunteer. I'll post details about what I do after I volunteer.

We are brainstorming ideas at dinner tonight after saying what we are thankful for so this is what we came up with:

*plant trees to make the world more beautiful

*conserve water or energy

*do you have a skill you can share with a brownie troop?

*buy girl scout cookies - you can even donate them if you don't want to eat them (Jaxon would be happy to sell them to you)

*collect books for a local shelter or library

*collect shoes for Haiti (Sport Chalet here is sending them if you bring them in)

*clean up a local park

*recycle bottles/cans

*donate blood

*visit an old age home

Hope there is something in here that you can use.

Love & Good Luck with your Goals!

Barbara, Jordan & Jaxon
