I will be staying as far away from the streets of San Francisco as possible. And I advise all others to do the same.

Goal

To get my driver's license! (I'm 33. Maybe it's time?)

I chose this goal because

Last year, I signed up for the I Think I Can Campaign on a whim; I've been needing to get my driver's license since I was 16. I figured I could bug Rob by making him give me driving lessons, and maybe get an old (as in very old) item off of my to-do list. Then I got my permit, went through a couple wierd driving instructors, got a bad back, stopped, started again, got as far as taking my test, and then found out my permit had expired because it had already been a year since I started! I was too embarrased to sign up for the campaign again but I continued on anyway. Then today, July 6, 2009, I did it! After six permits in California, two in Hawaii, and a dozen false starts, I got my license!!!

I really never thought that I would do it but I did. And the I Think I Can Campaign made it happen. So cough it up. Give some dough to At the Crossroads.

I'm helping because

As much as I've given Rob, the director of At the Crossroads, a hard time over the years, he's been a good friend to me and his organization has had some pretty inspiring staying power in a world of non-profits that are often as chaotic as the clients they serve. The quality of their work is really evident in the kinds of relationships they build with the kids they work with. I remember this one kid (he was same as age me probably) asking how he could get hooked in with At the Crossroad's services, which was surprising because he seemed like a pretty self-sufficient guy. But that's when I realized that, while the work I was doing was just keeping people alive, the work ATC did, and still does, was really focused on helping people realize their own dreams and goals, whatever those goals may be.

It's good stuff. Give them money. I spent at least a G on frikkin driving lessons, so I expect a match.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

And in other news, my other secret I Think I Can Campaign this year, one which I decided on but never announced, was to start a blog. And I did! So here it is:http://halfalonging.blogspot.com. Check it out.
