Goal

My goal is to plant and grow my first organic vegetable garden. As I begin learning and my garden starts to grow, please show your support by donating to the campaign. All your donations go to supporting At The Crossroads here in San Francisco. My hope is that as my garden grows, so will the donations!

I chose this goal because

I've always wanted to plant a vegetable garden and this year seems like a great time to start. As a new Bay Area resident, I think its time to start taking advantage of the rich soil and even climate. Aside from healthy organic vegetables, I know this garden will give me so much more and I plan to share that progress in updates!

I'm helping because

Long before moving to California, I knew I wanted to volunteer, advocate and/or support the homeless community. My father spend the majority of his adult life homeless and now that he is gone, this seems the best way to serve his memory. At The Crossroads offers their services to homeless young adults in a way that always gives dignity to their clients. For this and so much more, I want to help them in any way I can.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

So, I know it's been a while since I've updated . . . but good news is here! Our garden is growing! Currently we have squash, peas, green beens, lettuce, tomatoes and some herbs. Everyday I come home from work, water the garden and marvel over how much each plant has grown.

So after a brainstorming session with my cousin Blake and aunt Nancy, we decided to do this garden right. The new plan includes a 12" x 5" planter box and 60 cubic feet of soil. You should be pleased to know that the rain hasn't slowed us down. This garden is on it's way!

After composting all winter long, I began the first step towards my garden by turning the compost and soil over in the designated gardening spot. I soon found out the dogs wanted to help out, despite their lack of ability. The soil is so dark, soft and beautiful. Quite different from the Georgia red clay I am used to.
