Hi Mary! Sorry to be so late doing this. I LOVE giving blood, I find it relaxing. Plus you usually get cookies. But I had to take a year's break when I got my tattoo. Now you've inspired me to sign up again.

Goal

My goal is to donate blood at least once during the course of the campaign. (If you give whole blood you have to wait 8 weeks between donations.)

I chose this goal because

It's easy, it's almost painless, and it's very important--but I find myself all too often putting it off. Anyone want to come with me? Long ago, a friend and I used to use it as a chance to catch up. We'd ask for chairs next to each other so we could talk!

I'm helping because

I'm participating in the campaign again because I really believe in At The Crossroads. Especially in these economic times, ATC's young clients need a helping hand--whether that help is a sandwich and a packet of multivitamins, or a referral to a doctor or counselor, or help in formulating a strategy to get more stable housing than couch surfing or living on the street. Sometimes even a cheerful familiar face can offer hope. This is what the remarkable outreach workers of At The Crossroads do, and we know it has good results.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

So now my main photo shows my friend Judy and me, with our bandages on our elbows, having given blood on Wednesday, April 15. (Blood and taxes! What a day.) But we had fun doing it together, and I thank Judy for participating in my campaign. All the donations to ATC have been wonderful, and 3 more pints of blood were given to help people who need it. Hooray! My thanks to everyone who endured my emails, and a very special thank you to everyone who gave.

You did it! Five new people donated. But please don't stop donating now.

I'm off to the Irwin Blood Center with my friend Judy next Wednesday. Now I'm going to eat lots of dark green veggies to get my iron up. Allons-y! Andale! Onward!

My pal Judy is going to donate blood! That's a great donation to our community in honor of At The Crossroads, and a nice accompaniment to the money donations to ATC that are so needed. Thank you, Judy, for your inspiration.

Time flies when you're having fun. Apparently more than eight weeks have passed because I'm eligible to give blood AGAIN! So if you wonderful people out there give at least 3 donations of whatever size, thereby increasing my total amount of gifts above where it is currently STUCK ($3,125), I will beetle off and give another pint of blood. (What I do for this organization!--and gladly.) Let me hear from you.

It has come to my attention that there is some confusion out there (C.B., thank you!) You can give blood (it’s a very good thing to do), but what you are really being asked to do is to support the fact that I gave blood by giving $$ to At The Crossroads. (Think “Sponsoring a Marathon” but instead of running, I gave blood.) What I want you to do is GIVE MONEY!

I want to acknowledge those wonderful peeps who have already donated! However: I am MILES away from my goal, and At The Crossroads needs your help. In fact, one of my loyal supporters suggested that I might need to give more than blood, how about an ORGAN? Dan says he doesn’t think that’s such a good idea, and I’m not ready for that either.

But you should know that you don’t have to give blood. It’s much easier than that. You just have to fish out your credit card or checkbook and make a DONATION.

I am so lucky: my children have roofs over their heads and affectionate parental units to whom they can turn whenever they need support. The young clients of At The Crossroads are out in the cold and wet, and the outreach staff from ATC is their only lifeline to a future that might offer a stable place to live, an education, good health, a life free of drugs--where they can begin to realize their own hopes and dreams.

I did it today! Here I am at the Irwin Center, giving my pint. Now for my reward: please keep those $$ DONATIONS coming--the young people of At The Crossroads need your help. And let me know if YOU'VE given blood--I'd like to be able to highlight donations of money AND blood.
