Goal

Stop eating processed sugar (including fake sugar).

I chose this goal because

It seems impossible...sugar and fake sugar are in everything! I'm up for doing it, the cause is worth it!

I'm helping because

At The Crossroads is a very organized non-profit whose work is clearly valuable in San Francisco. I wholeheartedly believe in helping "at risk" youth. We can spend a couple bucks now to help our youth in SF or pay the price later when they turn to crime and drugs.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Week #3 & 4 Accomplished!

As this week comes to a close, as does the last chance to donate and support the campaign!!! Two more days!!!

The past two weeks have been ever more challenging as I'm learning processed and fake sugar is ridiculously difficult to stay away from. Highlights from the past two weeks:

1. Salsa: I had no idea that some salsa has sugar in it. It was pointed out to me by my grandfather as I bit into a chip with salsa. I abrubtly ran over to check the label...low and behold, ingredient #3: SUGAR.

2. Beef Jerky: Some people told me this should have been obvious, but I figured if it wasn't a sweet flavor, then we'd be all good. I picked up the pepper flavor to look at the ingredients and as I should have expected, sugar was #2 on the list.

THANK YOU to the people who have stepped up to support the campaign so far, your money is a great help and is definitely helping me to stay on track with my goal!

Week #2 Accomplished!

My fundraising efforts eclipsed the halfway mark this week thanks to some really close friends, THANK YOU to everyone who supported this week!

This week's challenges:

1. Ketchup: I ordered a burger this week and in the midst of stacking on my condiments, it dawned on me that looking at the ingredients might be a good precaution. Sure enough...ketchup had High Fructose Corn Syrup!!! I never would have guessed...bummer. Kind of...I don't even know what High Fructose Corn Syrup is, I was told it's like fake sugar, so there goes that option.

#2: Muffins: This was a no brainer. I know this one is hands off for this month, but there's an Italian restaurant called Aperto on Potrero Hill in SF, they serve freshly made miniature muffins with brunch...they were very, very, very tempting and while I was not near to being tricked, I was very near to being indulgent.

All of your support thus far has been inspiring and has gotten me through the halfway point of the campaign. Please feel free to share this link with friends who care about SF community involvement. THANKS!

Week #1 Accomplished!

Wow! I've been overwhelmed with the support of family & friends, I've almost reached the halfway mark of my fundraising goal in the first week of the campaign! A HUGE THANK you to all of you showing support early on!

A couple highlights on this weeks challenges:

1. Sugar in my coffee: This little habit was a tough one to drop! Coffee with no sugar? Are you kidding me? Well, I've lasted the first week with plain old coffee and pushing through for a few more weeks.

2. Trail Mix: Who would have thought I'd have to give up trail mix! It seems so healthy, but as soon as I flipped the bag over, apparently they add sugar to the dried cranberries and raisins, BUMMER!!! Oh well, I successfully made it this week on dry, bulk trail mix, no cranberries and raisins. This was a hard one to swallow.

Your support this week was critical to helping me not break the sugar fast, I TRULY appreciate all your help, and so does ATC (At the Crossroads)!
