Hi, Dawn! Good luck with your campaign, I hope you raise your goal, and also successfully give up sweets. A tip: take high-potency pharmaceutical-grade fish oil (at least 2.5 grams per day) (my favorite brand is Super Omega-3 from Life Extension Foundation, buy at iHerb.com), and eat lots of raw veggies -- after a few days, from my experience, you won't want sweets at all! :) take care, Kathy

Goal

For 30 days I am giving up sugar. I really love desserts. I eat them almost every day. I think I may be a bit addicted to sugar. So why give it up? Well I want to see if I can, I want to detox from the sweet stuff and help my community in the process. This campaign will help me in achieving this goal while raising money for At The Crossroads.

I chose this goal because

I come from a family of diabetics and I wonder if one day I too will develop this disease. I know my body craves desserts and I wonder if I can get a grip on this by cutting out sugar. I hope that what I learn from this experiment will help me to stay in control of these cravings and be a more sensible eater. And who knows maybe lose a little weight, can't hurt, right?

I'm helping because

I have lived in San Francisco for over 10 years and I know how difficult it can be to live here. I imagine what it would be like for those who didn't have the same opportunities and choices as I did growing up. ATC is an organization that I want to support because I believe all youth should have those opportunities and choices in life. There is so much potential and it's crucial to nurture this in our city. I want to see San Francisco be all it can be which includes all our citizens having a chance to shine. ATC helps empower youths to change their lives around.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Wow, my last day. I am very excited to have gotten this far. I actually think I can keep sugar in the background of my life, not front and center as it had been. I think I can limit sugar to one day a week, so hopefully the lesson I learned this month will serve me in all my years to come.

I would strongly encourage anyone to take up a campaign for the good. You accomplish some goal of yours, get support from your friends and family, and help raise money for homeless youth. A win, win, win.

I have reached my goal and even surpassed it! Licking my sugar habit hasn't been as difficult as I would have thought. Fruit is really an adequate substitute for my craving of sweets. Thank you to everyone who has helped me realize this goal and more importantly to help homeless youth get a new start in life.

I am so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from family and friends. Thank you all so much. You have already helped me to raise over half of the money I need to reach my goal. I am on day two and already seeing it will be more challenging than I thought. There is sugar added to many things that you just wouldn't even think about. But I discovered that fruit is already my new best friend.

3/1/10...Today is the day I will start my sweets free month. I decided that I am giving up all sweets except for fruit. I want to break the cycle of craving, hopefully. Thanks for your support!
