We Think Andrew Can
Support Mah-Jong while helping homeless youth
Goal
I will host 4 Mah-Jong salons by the end of the campaign. Winners (and Losers) will contribute in one way or another to raising money for At The Crossroads. Folks will learn to play Mah-Jong. Fun will be had.
I chose this goal because
Last year my goal was to learn 500 words of Mandarin. To the extent that I took two semesters of class for 4 hours after work on Monday nights and probably during that time 500 words of Mandarin came out of my mouth with the correct tones, I was successful. However, what I retained was well short of my goal, and IT WAS HARD! Mah-Jong, however, is easy. It is also super-fun! To further my Mandarin, I intend for one of the tables to be Mandarin speaking only. (There is a lot of good vocabulary in Mah-Jong.) We may even have a little tournament!! Give it Gas!! -Jia You!!
I'm helping because
Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel wrote that sanctuary "is often something very small. Not a grandiose gesture, but a small gesture toward alleviating human suffering and preventing humiliation. The sanctuary is a human being. Sanctuary is a dream. And that is why you are here and that is why I am here. We are here because of one another." I think ATC is a type of sanctuary, and I believe that a candy pack is "not a grandiose gesture." ATC meets critical needs of human beings at a critical time, and I will do what I can for them.
About At The Crossroads
ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.
