Goal

My goal is to reduce my Cholesterol this year. When it was taken in October of 2009, it was at 202 - YIKES for someone 29 years old. My goal is to get my Total Cholesterol down to 190. For every point I reduce my cholesterol, I will contribute $25 to ATC. I have given up beef, pork, and shellfish for 2010 to help me reach my goal. I will also continue to exercise often and eat a healthy diet and keep a diary of food confessions on this website. I will have my cholesterol level tested every month to gauge my results!

I chose this goal because

Because the lady that took my cholesterol yelled at me and said I needed to do something about it - that my cholesterol has been at this level for 2 years and if I come back next year with high cholesterol she is going to be really mad at me. Yes, I am scared of her. Also, I don't want to be on cholesterol-reducing drugs like some people in my family.

I'm helping because

I am helping ATC because it is a true grassroots organization that has a dedicated staff that is helping homeless people by developing real human relationships. We all know that just money can't solve long-term problems like homelessness or drug use, which often go hand-in-hand. It takes a long-term dedicated effort with personal interaction and trust. I have met some of the people that ATC has helped, and they lead amazing and fulfilling lives, something they thought was impossible and far away a few years ago. Thanks to the staff of ATC for believing in their clients every day.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

From my friend Lauren: Hey Allison! I am not working right now and $$ is tight, BUT I did want to support you spiritually in this cause! As someone who has had multiple diet restrictions, I would encourage you to ADD foods rather than take them away! For example, increasing soluble fiber (raw fruits and veggies, for ex.) and adding some cholesterol-reducing supplements might be just as effective as taking out the animal protein and enable you to "splurge" once in a while. You might consider seeing a holistic-trained physician or naturopath for additional alternatives to the issue. So much of this has to do with our particular genetic make-up and it doesn't do any good for doctors or other health professionals to "scare" patients or make them feel bad--especially when it sounds like they aren't giving you any alternatives.

6/22: I got my cholesterol - not good news. It actually went up! AGH. So upsetting. So I'm taking it to a new level. Oatmeal for breakfast Monday-Friday. Limiting the cheese - ie I got a burrito, with chicken/onions/peppers/rice/beans/salsa the other day - NO CHEESE. Going to power it up on the fruits/veggies to fill up on those... As many of you know, I'm not a girl to back down... I pledge to have my cholesterol taken again by the end of September.

May 16: Have totally played by the rules since I got back from Madagascar. Was at an event at the Janet Pomeroy Center Friday night - not eating shrimp and oysters was tough, but I did it!

March 29: I ate meat on the 15 hour plane ride from JFK to Johannesburg. They gave us roast beef and cheese sandwiches and I was so hungry that I ate it. Then at breakfast they gave me 2 sausages with my eggs - I gave one to Jon and couldn't resist eating the other.

March 30: I am in Antananarivo and ate zebu.So this is technically a kind of cow, but since they don't have them in the US, I'm not counting it as beef. I had to try it since they mostly live in Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebu
